US battery storage capacity has grown 27 times over in six years.
In 2020, the US had 1.5 GW of utility-scale battery storage. By the end of 2025, that number had reached 41 GW. By end of 2026, the EIA projects 65 GW.
That is not incremental growth. That is a technology crossing from niche to essential infrastructure.
Batteries are now doing something the grid has never had before: storing cheap midday solar and releasing it during evening peaks. In California, batteries met 36.6% of evening peak demand on a single day in April 2025. In Texas, batteries contributed more than 40% of grid ramping requirements in April 2026.
The numbers behind the chart: 1.5 GW in 2020. 3.8 GW in 2021. 9 GW in 2022. 16 GW in 2023. 26 GW in 2024. 41 GW in 2025. 65 GW projected for 2026.
