California just told its utilities: build more clean energy — fast.

Yesterday, the CPUC voted unanimously to order the state's load-serving entities to procure an additional 6 GW of clean energy capacity by 2032 — enough to power roughly 5 million homes.

The driver? Electricity demand is surging. EPRI reported this week that U.S. data centers alone could consume 9–17% of all electricity by 2030, more than double their current share. California's grid wasn't built for this — so the state is getting ahead of it.

As our latest data story shows, Southern California Edison (SCE) carries the largest obligation at 2,147 MW, followed by Pacific Gas and Electric Company at 1,041 MW. But CCAs like Clean Power Alliance, East Bay Community Energy, and San Diego Community Power are shouldering significant shares too. Every megawatt must come from zero-emission or RPS-eligible resources. And with federal clean energy tax credits at risk of expiring, the state is moving now to lock in favorable economics.
