In 2026, the U.S. electric grid faces a demand surge it was never designed to handle.

AI data centers. Industrial reshoring. Electrification of transport and heat. All arriving at once.

To understand why that is a problem, you have to go back forty years.

In 1985, the United States generated six times more electricity than China. The gap felt permanent. It was not.

China spent the next three decades building. Quietly, consistently, at a scale that had no precedent. By 2011, its output crossed the U.S. for the first time. By 2024, it generated 10,000 TWh. The U.S. generated 4,200.

Over the same period, U.S. electricity output barely moved. The grid that powered America in 2000 is largely the grid that powers it today. Engineers now rate it D+.

That is the backdrop for 2026. Not a new crisis, but the arrival of a reckoning that has been building for a generation.
